Mastering the Delicate Art of Hashtag Frequency

Hashtags are quite the delicate component of inbound marketing. If you use an excess of hashtags in your online content, you will inundate your audience with information that might annoy them to the point that they favor the competition. Use too few hashtags and you might not receive the attention you deserve. The challenge lies in finding the happy medium between these two extremes.

Develop a Hashtag Strategy

Hashtags are added to social media posts to bridge the gap between potential customers and businesses. From Instagram to Twitter and other social media platforms, hashtags play an important role in connecting Philadelphia companies to those who need or desire their services. Though Instagram allows for the use of 30 hashtags per post, it is not in your interest to max out this figure.

User engagement tails off at the point when 10+ hashtags are added to a post. It is interesting to note most people are willing to briefly scan hashtags after the initial four or five yet it is those first groups of hashtags that garner the most attention. 

Include the hashtags most relevant to your Philadelphia business, niche, and industry in your first five and you will have done your part to steer online traffic to your website, blog, and additional social media posts. The more relevant your hashtags are, the more likely people will be to continue reading them, and also peruse the rest of your social media content. 

Above all, avoid using banned hashtags. If you were to implement a hashtag that has been banned, the post would not appear in searches. Zero in on relevancy from the perspective of your target audience and your tags really will make a meaningful impact.

When in Doubt, Choose Fewer Hashtags

If you were to add 10 or more hashtags to your posts, many of your followers and those considering following your business on social media would view your business as inauthentic. 

A business that is strictly interested in amassing a large social media following and receiving as much attention as possible is not the type of company Philadelphia residents and companies trust. Carefully select 5-10 hashtags per post, weave them into your content appropriately, and it won’t take long to expand your online followers as well as your bottom line.
